How to Make for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken

This Lemon Gnocchi Chicken recipe is a breeze to prepare, even on the busiest of nights. With tender chicken breasts, soft gnocchi, and a creamy lemon sauce, this dish comes together in no time. Here’s how to make it step-by-step.

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

Start by seasoning the chicken breasts generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. Once the butter is melted and the pan is hot, add the chicken breasts and cook them for 6-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (75°C).

Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pan and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips or bite-sized pieces. This resting time allows the juices to redistribute and ensures the chicken stays moist.

Step 2: Cook the Gnocchi

While the chicken is cooking, you can prepare the gnocchi. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to the package instructions, usually about 2-3 minutes, or until the gnocchi float to the surface. Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the gnocchi and set them aside.

Step 3: Make the Lemon Sauce

In the same skillet where you cooked the chicken, add 2 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds, until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Next, add the zest and juice of 1 lemon to the skillet, followed by ½ cup of chicken broth. Stir to combine and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes to reduce slightly.

Then, pour in ½ cup of heavy cream and stir until the sauce becomes smooth and creamy. Allow the sauce to simmer for another 3-4 minutes, until it thickens up slightly. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt, pepper, and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes if you prefer a little heat.

Step 4: Combine Everything

Once the sauce is ready, add the cooked gnocchi to the skillet and toss them gently to coat with the lemon cream sauce. Add the sliced chicken on top and mix everything together until the chicken and gnocchi are evenly distributed and coated with the creamy sauce.

Cook everything together for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the dish to heat through.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

To finish, sprinkle the dish with freshly chopped parsley and, if desired, a bit more Parmesan cheese for an extra burst of flavor. Serve the Lemon Gnocchi Chicken hot, either on its own or paired with a light green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.

Serving and Storage Tips for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken

This Lemon Gnocchi Chicken is perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner, but it can also be a showstopper for a weekend gathering or dinner party. Here are some tips for serving and storing this dish to ensure you enjoy it at its best.

Serving Suggestions for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken:

1. Pair with a Light Side Salad: Since the dish is rich and creamy, it pairs wonderfully with a light, crisp side salad. A simple salad of mixed greens, arugula, or spinach with a lemon vinaigrette will complement the flavors of the dish without overpowering it.
2. Add a Protein Boost: If you want to increase the protein content of the dish, you can serve it with additional grilled chicken, shrimp, or even a light sprinkle of toasted pine nuts for a bit of crunch and extra texture.
3. Extra Zest: For those who love citrus, adding extra lemon zest on top just before serving will heighten the fresh, zesty flavors of the dish. You can also drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil for a touch of richness if you like.
4. Pair with Wine: If you enjoy wine, this dish pairs well with a light white wine such as Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio. The fresh acidity in these wines complements the tangy lemon sauce and creamy gnocchi.
5. Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Garnishing with freshly chopped herbs like parsley, basil, or thyme adds a nice touch of freshness and color to the dish. Fresh herbs also brighten up the creamy, rich sauce.

Storage Tips for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken:

This dish is best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers, don’t worry! You can easily store them for later.

• Refrigeration: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. The gnocchi may absorb some of the sauce, so it’s a good idea to add a splash of milk or chicken broth when reheating to help bring the creamy texture back.
• Reheating: Reheat the Lemon Gnocchi Chicken in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Add a small amount of milk or chicken broth to loosen up the sauce if needed. Alternatively, you can reheat it in the microwave, though the texture may not be as creamy.
• Freezing: While this dish is best when fresh, you can freeze it for up to 1 month. To freeze, place it in a freezer-safe container, and ensure it is tightly sealed. When you’re ready to eat, defrost it overnight in the fridge and reheat gently on the stovetop.

Mistakes to Avoid for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken

To make sure your Lemon Gnocchi Chicken turns out perfectly every time, here are a few common mistakes to avoid:

1. Overcooking the Chicken

Chicken breasts are easy to overcook, which can result in dry, tough meat. To avoid this, make sure you’re cooking the chicken over medium heat and checking the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. The chicken should reach 165°F (75°C) to ensure it’s fully cooked but still juicy. If you don’t have a thermometer, make sure the chicken is golden brown on the outside and the juices run clear when you cut into it.

2. Overcooking the Gnocchi

Gnocchi cooks very quickly, usually within 2-3 minutes of being dropped in boiling water. Once they float to the top, they are ready to be removed. Don’t leave them in the water too long or they’ll become mushy. As soon as they rise, use a slotted spoon to remove them and transfer them to a plate.

3. Burning the Garlic

Garlic adds a wonderful aroma to the sauce, but it can burn easily, especially if you’re cooking it over high heat. If garlic burns, it can make your sauce bitter. To avoid this, cook garlic over medium heat and only for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir it constantly to prevent burning.

4. Not Adjusting the Sauce Consistency

Sometimes the sauce can be too thick or too thin, depending on the type of cream you use or the simmering time. If your sauce is too thick, add a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen it up. If it’s too thin, let it simmer for a few more minutes to thicken. Always taste the sauce before serving and adjust the seasoning to your liking.

5. Skipping the Resting Time for Chicken

After cooking the chicken, let it rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. This step is essential because it allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the chicken moist and flavorful. If you slice the chicken immediately after cooking, you may lose some of the juices, resulting in drier meat.

Tips and Tricks for Lemon Gnocchi Chicken

Here are some pro tips and tricks that will help you elevate your Lemon Gnocchi Chicken to the next level, ensuring it’s as flavorful and easy to make as possible.

1. Make Your Own Gnocchi

While store-bought gnocchi is convenient and tasty, making your own fresh gnocchi can take this dish to new heights. Homemade gnocchi has a soft, delicate texture that pairs perfectly with the creamy lemon sauce. If you’re up for it, try this simple recipe for homemade gnocchi:

• Combine 2 cups of mashed potatoes with 1 egg and 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour. Add a pinch of salt, and knead until smooth.
• Roll the dough into ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces.
• Boil until they float to the surface, and then proceed with the recipe as written.

Homemade gnocchi can be frozen for later use, so you can make a big batch and store them for future meals.

2. Adjust the Creaminess

Not everyone loves a super creamy sauce, so feel free to adjust the consistency to your liking. For a lighter version of the dish, you can use half-and-half instead of heavy cream, or for an even lighter option, try whole milk. If you prefer a richer, more indulgent sauce, stick with the heavy cream. You can also skip the cream entirely and use a little bit of cream cheese for a tangy, creamy sauce.

3. Add Fresh Herbs for Extra Flavor

Fresh herbs can brighten up any dish, and this one is no exception. Try adding a handful of fresh basil, thyme, or oregano to your Lemon Gnocchi Chicken. Toss the herbs into the sauce just before serving to infuse a fresh, aromatic flavor. Fresh thyme pairs especially well with the lemon, giving the dish a Mediterranean flair.

4. Use Grilled Chicken for a Smokier Flavor

If you’re looking to add another layer of flavor, try grilling the chicken breasts instead of pan-searing them. Grilled chicken adds a smoky, charred taste that complements the lemony sauce. This can be especially delicious if you're serving the dish in the summer months.

5. Give the Sauce Some Heat

If you like a little heat in your meals, consider adding ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the sauce for a gentle kick. The heat will complement the bright lemon flavor and bring an extra dimension to the dish.

Suggestions

This recipe is highly adaptable, so feel free to make changes based on what you have on hand or your personal taste preferences. Here are some ideas for customizing your meal:

1. Add Vegetables

For an extra boost of nutrition, add some vegetables to the dish. Sautéed spinach, roasted tomatoes, or even peas would all complement the creamy, lemony sauce. For a more hearty option, try adding roasted broccoli or mushrooms. They pair well with the richness of the sauce and add texture to the dish.

2. Try Different Proteins

If you're not a fan of chicken or are looking for a different protein, you can easily swap it out for something else. Shrimp is a great option, offering a light, delicate flavor that pairs wonderfully with the creamy sauce. You can also use grilled or roasted turkey breast for a leaner, yet still delicious, option. If you're craving something vegetarian, crispy tofu or tempeh would also work well in place of the chicken.

3. Make It Spicy

To add some spice, toss in a few chopped jalapeños or fresh chili flakes into the sauce while cooking. This will create a spicy-sweet contrast with the tangy lemon and buttery sauce.

4. Skip the Cream for a Lighter Sauce

If you want a lighter version of this dish, you can replace the cream with Greek yogurt or coconut cream. This gives the dish a tangy flavor while still maintaining a creamy texture, without all the heaviness of traditional cream.

5. Add Nuts for Texture

For some added crunch and flavor, you can sprinkle toasted pine nuts or slivered almonds over the finished dish. These add a nice contrast to the smooth gnocchi and creamy sauce, making the meal even more enjoyable.
