How to Make Easy French Onion Soup
Follow these simple steps to prepare this delicious dish:
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
In a large pot over medium heat, melt about four tablespoons of butter. Add your sliced yellow onions and stir them gently as they begin to soften. After about ten minutes, reduce the heat and let them slowly caramelize for another 30-40 minutes until they're golden brown and fragrant.
Step 2: Add Wine
Pour in half a cup of dry white wine while scraping up any bits stuck at the bottom of the pot—those little morsels are packed with flavor! Let it simmer for about five minutes until most of the liquid evaporates.
Step 3: Pour in Broth
Add six cups of beef broth into your pot along with a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste. Bring it all to a gentle boil before reducing the heat again and letting it simmer for an additional 20 minutes.
Step 4: Prepare Bread
While your soup simmers away happily, preheat your oven to broil (high). Slice your baguette into thick pieces—about one inch each—and place them on a baking sheet. Top each slice generously with Gruyère cheese before placing them under the broiler for about three minutes until bubbly and golden.
Step 5: Serve
Ladle your steaming soup into bowls, topping them with those cheesy baguette slices. If you're feeling fancy (and who wouldn’t?), add some extra Gruyère on top before popping it back under the broiler for another minute just until everything gets beautifully gooey.
Step 6: Enjoy!
Transfer to plates and drizzle with sauce for the perfect finishing touch.
