Suggestions for BBQ Grilled Salmon
Choose the Right Cut of Salmon
Selecting the right cut of salmon is crucial for achieving perfect BBQ grilled salmon. Opt for cuts that are thicker, such as salmon fillets or steaks, which can withstand the heat of the grill without drying out. Thinner cuts may cook too quickly, leading to overcooked fish. Look for fresh, high-quality salmon with a vibrant color and firm texture. If possible, ask your fishmonger about the best options available. Additionally, consider using skin-on fillets, as the skin acts as a protective barrier against direct heat and helps keep the fish moist during grilling.
Marinate Effectively
Marinating your salmon enhances its flavor and moisture content. However, avoid over-marinating as this can break down the fish's texture. A good rule of thumb is to marinate for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Use a blend of olive oil, citrus juices, herbs, and spices to create a balanced marinade that complements the natural richness of the salmon without overpowering it. Always discard any leftover marinade that has come into contact with raw fish to prevent cross-contamination.
Preheat Your Grill Properly
Preheating your grill is essential for achieving that perfect sear on your BBQ grilled salmon. A properly heated grill ensures even cooking and prevents sticking. Aim for a temperature between 375°F to 450°F (190°C to 232°C) when grilling salmon. To test if your grill is ready, hold your hand about six inches above the grates; you should feel intense heat after just a few seconds. Grease the grill grates lightly with oil before placing the fish on them to further reduce sticking and ensure easy flipping.
Monitor Cooking Time
Overcooking is one of the most common mistakes when preparing BBQ grilled salmon. Keep an eye on cooking time based on thickness; generally, aim for about 6-8 minutes per side for a standard fillet about one inch thick. Salmon is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) and flakes easily with a fork but still retains moisture. Use a meat thermometer for accuracy or check by gently pressing down on the fillet with a fork; if it flakes easily but remains slightly translucent in the center, it’s perfectly cooked.

FAQs
What type of salmon is best for BBQ grilling?
When choosing salmon for BBQ grilling, opt for fatty varieties like King (Chinook), Sockeye, or Coho salmon. These types not only offer rich flavor but also have higher fat content that keeps them moist during cooking. Freshness matters too; look for bright color and firm texture at your local seafood market or grocery store.
How do I prevent my BBQ grilled salmon from sticking to the grill?
To prevent sticking while grilling salmon, ensure your grill grates are clean and well-oiled before cooking. Preheat your grill adequately and consider using skin-on fillets since they tend to stick less than skinless ones. If you’re worried about sticking, you can also use a grilling basket or foil to create an easier cooking surface.
Can I use different marinades for BBQ grilled salmon?
Absolutely! While classic marinades often feature ingredients like soy sauce and lemon juice, feel free to experiment with flavors such as teriyaki sauce, garlic herb blends, or even spicy marinades with chili paste. Just remember not to marinate too long—30 minutes up to two hours is ideal—to maintain texture.
What sides pair well with BBQ grilled salmon?
BBQ grilled salmon pairs wonderfully with various sides that enhance its flavors. Consider serving it alongside fresh salads featuring greens like arugula or spinach tossed in vinaigrette dressing. Grilled vegetables such as asparagus or zucchini also complement its richness beautifully. For heartier options, couscous or quinoa salads add texture and substance.
