Description
Old-Fashioned Goulash is a comforting, hearty dish that combines ground beef, tomatoes, and elbow macaroni in a savory, flavorful sauce. It's a classic family favorite that's easy to make and perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the Beef and Vegetables:
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add the Tomato and Seasonings:
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Cook the Macaroni:
- Add the elbow macaroni to the skillet, stirring to combine. Simmer for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the macaroni is cooked and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Serve:
- If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top before serving. Enjoy hot, and consider pairing it with a side of garlic bread or a green salad.
Notes
- For a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version of this dish.
