Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles (plus more for topping)

For the vanilla buttercream

  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups (480 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Beat in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and top with sprinkles. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before transferring to plates. Serve with additional sprinkles or frosting if desired.
  7. Make the vanilla buttercream: beat the softened butter for 3 to 4 minutes until pale and fluffy. Add the sifted powdered sugar a cup at a time on low speed, then the milk and vanilla. Beat 2 minutes more, until light and spreadable. Frost only once the bake has cooled completely.
