Description

Scalloped Potatoes and Ham is a classic comfort dish featuring tender slices of potatoes layered with savory ham and a rich, creamy sauce. Topped with optional cheddar cheese, this baked casserole is perfect for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ⅓ cup butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon thyme
  • 3 cups milk
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 3 pounds white potatoes, sliced about 1/8" thick
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked ham, diced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preparation and Preheat: Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13" baking pan.
  2. Sauté Onion: Cook the diced onion in butter over medium-low heat until tender. Add thyme and flour, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Make Sauce: Reduce heat, gradually add milk, whisking until thickened. Stir in chicken broth, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 1 minute.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Layer ⅓ of the potatoes, ham, and sauce in the pan. Repeat layers, finishing with sauce on top.
  5. Bake: Cover and bake for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 25-35 minutes. Add cheddar cheese in the last 15 minutes if desired.
  6. Serve: Allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For uniform potato slices, use a mandoline slicer.
  • Let the dish rest before serving to allow the sauce to set.
  • You can substitute ham with cooked chicken or vegetables for a different flavor.
