- 1 small onion, diced
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon thyme
- 3 cups milk
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 3 pounds white potatoes, sliced about 1/8" thick
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups cooked ham, diced
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preparation and Preheat: Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13" baking pan.
- Sauté Onion: Cook the diced onion in butter over medium-low heat until tender. Add thyme and flour, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
- Make Sauce: Reduce heat, gradually add milk, whisking until thickened. Stir in chicken broth, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 1 minute.
- Layer Ingredients: Layer ⅓ of the potatoes, ham, and sauce in the pan. Repeat layers, finishing with sauce on top.
- Bake: Cover and bake for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 25-35 minutes. Add cheddar cheese in the last 15 minutes if desired.
- Serve: Allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
Notes
- For uniform potato slices, use a mandoline slicer.
- Let the dish rest before serving to allow the sauce to set.
- You can substitute ham with cooked chicken or vegetables for a different flavor.
