Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cake:
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • Purple food coloring (gel)
  • For the Frosting:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 4 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 2-3 tbsp milk
    • Purple food coloring (gel)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  • Mix the dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cream the butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk until smooth.
  • Divide the batter: Split the batter into three bowls. Add purple food coloring to each, creating three different shades of purple.
  • Bake the cakes: Pour each batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool.
  • Make the frosting: Beat the butter for the frosting until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth. Divide the frosting into three bowls, adding purple food coloring to each.
  • Assemble the cake: Layer the cakes, starting with the darkest color at the bottom and the lightest on top. Apply a crumb coat and chill for 30 minutes.
  • Frost the cake: After chilling, cover the entire cake with the frosting, smoothing it out as you go to create the ombre effect.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you want a stronger purple color, add more gel food coloring, but avoid overdoing it, as too much can alter the texture.
  • Chill the cake after applying the crumb coat to prevent the frosting from sliding.
  • Feel free to get creative with the frosting by adding fresh flowers or edible glitter for a decorative touch.
