Ingredients

Scale

  • For the Cake:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
    • 1 tablespoon orange zest
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt

    For the Orange Frosting:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
    • 1 teaspoon orange zest
    • 1-2 tablespoons milk (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract, orange juice, and zest.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  4. Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly between the two pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Make the Frosting: In a bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest. Add milk as needed to reach a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  6. Frost the Cake: Once the cake is fully cooled, spread the frosting evenly between the layers and over the top. Garnish with extra orange zest if desired.

Notes

  • For a stronger orange flavor, increase the amount of orange zest in both the cake and frosting.
  • You can add a few drops of orange food coloring for a vibrant look.
