Ingredients

Scale

For the Topping:

  • 4 medium oranges, sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest from 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  • Prepare the topping: In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter with 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon honey over medium heat. Stir until smooth. Add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour this mixture into a greased 9-inch round cake pan, then layer the orange slices on top.
  • Make the cake batter: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat 1/2 cup softened butter and 1 cup sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each. Mix in orange juice, vanilla, and zest. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, mixing just until combined.
  • Assemble and bake: Pour the batter over the oranges. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then flip onto a serving plate.
  • Serve and enjoy: Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving. It’s perfect with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
