Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground sausage (pork, chicken, or turkey)
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 package of puff pastry (2 sheets, thawed)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: ½ cup grated Gruyère cheese, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown (about 15-20 minutes). Set aside to cool.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a bowl, combine ground sausage, caramelized onions, thyme, salt, and pepper. If using, mix in cheese and mustard.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Assemble the Rolls:
- Roll out puff pastry on a floured surface. Cut into rectangles (4x6 inches). Place a spoonful of filling on each rectangle, fold over, and seal edges with a fork. Brush tops with beaten egg.
- Bake:
- Place on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, substitute sausage with a mix of sautéed mushrooms and lentils.
- These rolls can be made ahead of time and frozen unbaked; just add extra baking time if cooking from frozen.
