Delight in these fluffy Cream-Filled Italian Donuts, also known as Bomboloni. With a light, airy texture and a rich cream filling, they’re perfect for breakfast, dessert, or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Cream Filling:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine warmed milk and yeast with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Donuts:
    • Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter to cut out donuts and holes.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Place the donuts on a floured baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30-40 minutes.
  7. Fry the Donuts:
    • Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pan. Fry donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Prepare the Cream Filling:
    • Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  9. Fill the Donuts:
    • Once cooled, fill each donut with cream using a piping bag.
  10. Serve:
  • Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy fresh!

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider infusing the cream with citrus zest or coffee.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored for 1-2 days in an airtight container.
