Description

This warm and comforting apple crisp features tender, spiced apples topped with a crispy oat and brown sugar streusel. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect fall treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Apple Filling:
    • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Crisp Topping:
    • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
    • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
    • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the Crisp Topping:
In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the melted butter over the mixture and stir until crumbly.
  4. Assemble and Bake:
Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  5. Serve:
Let the apple crisp cool for 10 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Storage: Store the apple crisp covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the apple crisp before or after baking. To freeze before baking, assemble the crisp and cover tightly with plastic wrap and foil. Bake directly from frozen, adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time.
  • Apple Variety: For a balance of tart and sweet, use a combination of apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp.
