Description

Amish Country Casserole is a hearty, comforting dish made with creamy mashed potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese. This easy-to-make casserole is perfect for feeding a crowd or enjoying a cozy meal with your family.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks. Add the diced onions and cook until softened. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Make the Beef Mixture: Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes to combine all the flavors.
  4. Assemble the Casserole: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer the mashed potatoes on the bottom. Spread the beef mixture evenly over the potatoes. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  5. Add the Topping (Optional): For a crispy topping, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the cheese layer.
  6. Bake the Casserole: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, uncover and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the top is golden brown.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Mashed Potatoes: You can use homemade mashed potatoes or store-bought mashed potatoes for convenience. If using store-bought, be sure to choose a creamy variety for the best texture.
  • Ground Beef Substitute: Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for a leaner version of this casserole.
  • Cheese: Feel free to use a blend of cheeses such as mozzarella and cheddar for a richer flavor.
